How to Convert a Screenshot to PDF on Mac (3 Easy Ways, 2026)
Convert any screenshot to PDF on Mac: Preview export, the print dialog, or one-click PDF export with Snappix — including multi-page PDFs and full-page scrolling captures.
PNG is great for chat apps; PDF is better for everything else that matters — printing, archiving, combining multiple captures into one document, and keeping screenshots readable at any zoom level. The short answer: open the screenshot in Preview and use File → Export as PDF, or press ⌘+P and choose Save as PDF. Both take under ten seconds.
Here are all three methods, plus how to merge many screenshots into a single PDF and how to turn an entire web page into a paginated PDF.
Method 1: Preview — Export as PDF
- Open the screenshot in Preview (double-click the PNG on your Desktop).
- Choose File → Export as PDF…
- Name the file and pick a folder → Save.
That's it — pixel-identical PDF, same dimensions as the original image. Use this for single screenshots you need to file, print or email.
Method 2: The Print Dialog → Save as PDF
The macOS print dialog can turn any printable view into a PDF — screenshots included:
- Open the screenshot in Preview (or any viewer).
- Press ⌘+P to open the print dialog.
- Click the PDF dropdown in the bottom-left corner.
- Choose Save as PDF.
Why bother with this route? The PDF dropdown also offers Save as PostScript and direct handoff to Mail or Notes, so it doubles as a quick export hub. (If you need a password-protected PDF, that's a separate step in Preview: File → Export, then check Encrypt — the print dialog itself doesn't do encryption.)
Method 3: Snappix — Export Captures as PDF in One Click
Both built-in routes start from a file that's already on disk. Snappix shortens the path:
- Capture any region, window or full-page scrolling shot with Snappix.
- Annotate if needed — arrows, highlights, smart-blur for private info.
- Export → PDF directly from the editor. Done.
No Preview round-trip, no temp files. And the scrolling-capture-to-PDF combo is the standout: a long web page becomes a properly paginated PDF you can print or share as a document — something a single tall PNG can't do. Batch conversions of existing image files are covered below.
Bonus: Merge Several Screenshots into One PDF
Need ten screenshots in a single document? Preview does it without extra software:
- Open the first screenshot in Preview.
- Open the thumbnails sidebar (View → Thumbnails).
- Drag the other screenshots into the sidebar, in order (each becomes a page).
- File → Export as PDF… — one PDF, multiple pages.
Rearranging pages is drag-and-drop in the same sidebar, and you can delete pages before exporting.
Bonus 2: Convert Image Files to PDF or Another Format in Bulk
If you already have a folder of PNGs (or want JPG/WebP instead of PDF), you don't need to open each one. The free online image converter on this site converts up to 10 images at a time — PNG, JPG and WebP — entirely in your browser, with no uploads. It pairs well with PDF export when you need different formats for different audiences.
When Should You Use PDF Instead of PNG?
| Situation | Best format |
|---|---|
| Pasting into Slack, iMessage, a ticket | PNG |
| Printing a receipt or confirmation | |
| Multi-page documentation or reports | |
| Emailing something that must print correctly | |
| Long web page you need as a "document" | Scrolling capture → PDF |
| Uploading to services that reject PNGs | PDF (or JPG) |
Ready to Skip the Detour?
Snappix exports any capture — region, window or full-page scrolling shot — as PNG, JPG, WebP or PDF straight from the editor, with annotation and smart blur built in before you export.
