Where Are Screenshots Saved on Mac? (And How to Change It)

Mac screenshots save to the Desktop by default as 'Screenshot' PNG files. Learn every save location, how to find screenshots with Spotlight, and how to change the folder.

You just took a screenshot on your Mac — and now you can't find it. You're not alone. "Where are screenshots saved on Mac?" is one of the most common macOS questions, because the answer isn't obvious: by default, screenshots are saved to your Desktop with a long, timestamped filename like Screenshot 2026-09-19 at 10.42.07 AM.png.

In this guide you'll learn exactly where every kind of capture lands — full-screen shots, window captures, screen recordings — plus three ways to find a lost screenshot and how to change the save location permanently.

Where Mac Screenshots Are Saved by Default

macOS sorts captures into two destinations depending on what you took:

Capture typeDefault locationDefault filename
Screenshot (full screen, window, selection)DesktopScreenshot [date] at [time].png
Screen recordingDesktopScreen Recording [date] at [time].mov
Screenshot saved to clipboard (with Ctrl held)Clipboard only — nothing is written to disk—

The filename format matters more than it seems. Since macOS Ventura (2022), every screenshot starts with Screenshot — one word, no spaces — so you can search for all of them at once in Finder or Spotlight (more on that below). On older macOS versions (Monterey and earlier) the prefix was Screen Shot with a space, so if you're still running one of those, search for that instead.

A few things can change this behavior:

  • Stacks on the Desktop group screenshots into a single collapsible tile (right-click the Desktop → Use Stacks). Your files are still on the Desktop; they just look tidier.
  • iCloud Desktop & Documents — if you sync your Desktop to iCloud Drive, screenshots upload there too, and may be evicted locally to free space. Check System Settings → Apple Account → iCloud → Drive.
  • Third-party tools like Snappix save to their own folder or straight to your clipboard, bypassing the Desktop entirely.

How to Find a Lost Screenshot on Mac

1. Search Finder by filename prefix

Open Finder → your Mac's Desktop (or any folder), then type Screenshot into the search field. Every screenshot on the volume that still carries the default name appears instantly. (On macOS Monterey or older, search for Screen Shot instead.) If you've renamed screenshots before, try searching by date instead: in Finder press ⌘+F, filter by Kind is Image, then sort by Date Modified.

2. Use Spotlight

Press ⌘+Space and type Screenshot. Spotlight indexes the Desktop first, so recent captures appear at the top. To narrow things down by date, use a search operator like screenshot created:yesterday.

3. Check the Recents folder

Finder → Recents shows the files you touched most recently, screenshots included. It's a quick catch-all when you can't remember which folder a tool saved to.

If a screenshot truly isn't on disk, it may have gone to the clipboard instead — that happens whenever you hold Ctrl while capturing (e.g. ⌘+Ctrl+Shift+4). Paste it into Preview or any editor with ⌘+V to recover it.

How to Change Where Screenshots Are Saved

macOS gives you two built-in ways to redirect captures.

Option 1: The Screenshot app menu (easiest)

  1. Press ⌘+Shift+5 to open the Screenshot toolbar.
  2. Click Options.
  3. Under Save to, pick a suggested folder or click Other Location… to browse.
  4. New screenshots now land there automatically.

Option 2: Terminal (set it system-wide)

If you prefer the command line, defaults writes the preference directly:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture location ~/Pictures/Screenshots
killall SystemUIServer

Create the folder first if it doesn't exist (mkdir -p ~/Pictures/Screenshots). The killall command restarts the menu-bar service so the change takes effect immediately.

You can also strip spaces from the default filename with:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture name "Snap"
killall SystemUIServer

From now on, captures are named Snap 2026-09-19 at ….png — much easier to search.

Screenshots Saved but Nowhere to Be Seen?

If the Desktop is flooded with files or iCloud keeps evicting them, the cleaner fix is to stop treating the Desktop as a dumping ground. A capture tool with its own save logic keeps things organized from the start: Snappix saves every screenshot to a dedicated folder, can copy captures straight to your clipboard for pasting into Slack or email, and lets you annotate before you share — so half the files never need to exist at all.

It also bundles scrolling screenshots, OCR text extraction and screen recording, which the built-in shortcuts don't offer at all. If you spend more than a minute a day hunting for captures, Snappix for Mac is worth the two-minute setup.

Quick Reference

  • Default save location: Desktop
  • Default filename: Screenshot [date] at [time].png (recordings: Screen Recording ….mov)
  • Change it: ⌘+Shift+5 → Options → Save to, or defaults write com.apple.screencapture location <path>
  • Clipboard-only capture: hold Ctrl with any screenshot shortcut
  • Search them all: type Screenshot in Finder or Spotlight

Screenshots going to the right place is step one. If you want them organized — annotated, named and shareable in seconds — grab the best snipping tool for Mac and let it handle the workflow end to end.
