How to Extract Text from Images on Mac (Screenshot to Text, 2026)

Turn any image into editable text on Mac: use Live Text for photos, or extract text from any screen region with Snappix OCR — plus a free online OCR tool that runs in your browser.

You need the text that's trapped inside an image — a screenshot of an error message, a photo of a whiteboard, a scanned contract. Retyping it is slow and error-prone. OCR (Optical Character Recognition) solves it by converting image text into editable, copyable text automatically.

Here's the short version: on Mac, capture any screen region with Snappix and its text lands on your clipboard instantly — no upload, no waiting. Below are all the methods, when to use each, and how to get the best accuracy.

Method 1: Snappix — Screenshot to Text in One Keystroke

macOS's built-in Live Text (below) works on saved images, but it can't grab text from an arbitrary region of your screen in a single action. That's the gap Snappix fills:

  1. Install Snappix — free to download, lives in your menu bar.
  2. Trigger OCR capture — press the OCR hotkey and drag over any region of the screen: a tooltip in a video, a code block in a PDF, text in an image on a webpage.
  3. Get the text — recognition runs locally in a second, and the extracted text is on your clipboard, ready to paste anywhere.

Because OCR is built into the screenshot workflow, there's no intermediate file to manage. It also handles multiple languages, so it works for translating UI text and foreign documents. Snappix processes everything locally on your Mac — screenshots with sensitive data never touch a server. (The full feature rundown lives on the Screenshot to Text page.)

Method 2: macOS Live Text (Built-in)

macOS includes OCR since Monterey, called Live Text:

  1. Open the image in Preview or Photos.
  2. Hover over the text until the cursor switches to a text beam.
  3. Select and copy like normal text.

Limits: it works on whole, saved images — not on a region you pick mid-workflow. Accuracy on small UI text and low-contrast screenshots is weaker than dedicated OCR. If your image isn't a file yet (text visible only on screen), Live Text forces an extra save-and-open step.

Method 3: Free Online OCR (No Install)

On a PC, a work laptop, or a Mac where you can't install software? Use the free online OCR tool on this site:

  1. Drag in an image (PNG, JPG, WebP).
  2. Pick the text language.
  3. Click Extract Text — recognition runs entirely in your browser via WebAssembly. The image is never uploaded to a server.
  4. Copy the text or download it as a .txt file.

It's the same privacy model as the Mac app: local processing, zero uploads, no signup.

How to Get Better OCR Accuracy

OCR quality depends mostly on the input image. Five things make the biggest difference:

  1. Zoom before capturing. Text at 200% page zoom extracts far more accurately than tiny 11px UI text.
  2. Prefer dark text on a light background. Invert low-contrast screenshots in Preview first if needed.
  3. Pick the right language before extraction — mixed-language images (e.g. English UI with Chinese comments) benefit from choosing both.
  4. Avoid heavy JPEG artifacts. Screenshots saved as PNG extract better than re-compressed photos of screens.
  5. Straighten skews. Rotated or perspective-warped text (photos of documents taken at an angle) is the most common accuracy killer.

Common Use Cases

  • Error messages and stack traces — grab them from a video call screen-share without asking for a log file.
  • Code from slides or tutorials — the OCR route beats retyping, every time.
  • Receipts and invoices — extract totals into an expense sheet.
  • Foreign-language UI text — extract, then paste into a translator.
  • Quotes from PDFs that block copying — capture and OCR the region instead.

Ready to Stop Retyping?

Snappix turns screenshots into text with one keystroke — and bundles capture, annotation, scrolling screenshots, beautification and screen recording in the same Mac app.
